Wisdom for Each Day – August 8, 2014

Is everything that happens to us already determined by God?  Or do we have the ability to carry out plans on our own, regardless of what God hoped would happen?

Theologians have disagreed about this for centuries – some stressing God’s absolute control over everything, others emphasizing our freedom to act on our own.  And the reason they haven’t agreed is because the Bible teaches both God’s sovereignty and our human responsibility.  To us this sounds like a contradiction – and one I don’t believe we’ll fully understand until we get to Heaven.  Until that day, we need to hold firmly to both truths: God is in control of everything, but we are also responsible for our actions.

It is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.

Philippians 2:13
