The Encroaching Darkness

I want to share one my favorite authors/speakers talking about a subject of great importance.  We are living in dark times, but we are not left alone and without hope.  It is so important to know who we are as children of God and to know what He has said so that we may view the dying world around us through his eyes.  We need to get back into the Word in a way like never before to be salt and light to a world that has largely turned away from Him!

New U.N. Report Erases All Doubts: Iran Is Developing Nuclear Warheads And The Missiles To Deliver Them

Please take a moment to read Joel’s blog on this subject.  We’ve all known the Iranians have been developing nuclear weapons even though they’ve gone before the world and protested otherwise.  If you are an American or a Jew, beware because those in power in Iran have vowed to wipe the Great (America) and Little (Israel) Satan off the face of the earth.  Anybody who thinks that Iran will develop nuclear weapons capabilities and then not use them is deluded and foolish.  

Times are changing!  Open your eyes and see!  He who has an ear, let him hear!


The Tiny Book of Jude…

I was listening to 66/40 this week and last and it happens to be on the book of Jude.  I thought I would share some commentary on the book of the Bible by my favorite author, Chuck Missler.  The following excerpt is taken from his Learn the Bible in 24 Hours Book.

The epistle of Jude is just one chapter, but is full of surprises!

Jude was the half brother of Jesus.  He also was an unbeliever while Christ was alive, but became a believer after the ressurection.

In this letter, Jude attacked apostasy and argued for his readers to contend for the faith because some people would fall away.  He argued against subtle perversions which included at least two basic denials: denying grace by turning it to lasciviousness (just because we have liberty in Christ does not give us a right to sin); and denying our Lord and Master Jesus Christ.

Apostasy will lead to certain doom, and he used three examples: Egypt, the angels in Genesis 6 (see previous post on this), and Sodom. He also pointed to three apostates by using the examples of Cain, Balaam, and Korah; and then emphasized the utter falsity of these teachers by using six awful metaphors.

An analysis of 2 Peter deals with many of these same things, but in Peter they are future tense; in Jude they are past tense.  Apparently the prophecies in 2 Peter were fulfilled by the time Jude wrote his letter.

In light of the fact that apostasy has been foretold, Jude told his readers how to contend: they should build, pray, keep, and look.  And they should support those who contend. 

Jude focused on the certainty of judgment, and he used an extremely provocative example:

And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.  Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
     Jude 1:6,7

Jude argued that these false teachers were going to be judged.  Then he linked the errors of Sodom and Gomorrah in “going after strange flesh” with the angels in Genesis 6.  (The Scripture always confirms the truth by two or three witnesses, and 2 Peter 2:4 and Jude 1:6,7 refer to the angels in Genesis 6.)

Here is something extremely provocative – Jude quotes a prophecy given by Enoch.

And Enoch, also the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints , to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
     Jude 1:14,15

Jude was quoting this prophecy of Enoch, as it was presumably familiar to his readers; but let’s stop and realize what was going on.  The oldest prophecy uttered by a prophet, uttered before the Flood of Noah, is a prophecy of the Second Coming of Christ.

But Jude did something else that should disturb us.  He chose a bizarre example to make his case.

Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities.  Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
     Jude 1:8,9 

Here again, Jude alluded to some background familiar to his readers, but which has been lost to us.  First of all, the fact that there was a dispute between Michael and the devil regarding the body of Moses is a surprise.  Where did that  happen?  And why would Satan want the body of Moses?

In any case, the point is that even when Michael was contending with Satan, he didn’t speak evil of Satan.  He said, “The Lord rebuke you.”  Jude would tell us to not speak evil of dignities, and he chose Satan himself to make the point.  Don’t speak evil of him; don’t rail directly against him.  Let the Lord deal with him.  If you are ever confronted with a demon, rely on the authority of Jesus Christ.  Don’t try to confront a demon on your own.

Hidden Messages in Genesis 5

Excerpted from the book Learn the Bible in 24 Hours by Dr. Chuck Missler:

This section will begin with a riddle: Methusaleh is well known to be the oldest man in the Bible, yet he died before his father.  How can that be?

Enoch, Methusaleh’s father, didn’t die; he was transferred directly to heaven without passing through death (“raptured,” as some would say).  It is interesting that the oldest prophecy in the Bible was uttered by Enoch before the flood of Noah and concerned the Second Coming of Christ.  (It is not found here in Genesis but in the next-to-last book of the Bible, Jude).
Another fact about Enoch is that at age sixty-five, something very special happened in his life.  From that day on, for over three hundred years, he “walked with God.”  It seems that when his son was born, he was told that as long as his son was alive, the forthcoming judgment of the flood (the flood of Noah) would be withheld.

Enoch thus named his son using two Hebrew roots: muth, which means “his death,” and shelac, which is a verb form that means “bring,” or “sent forth.”  So the name Methusaleh means “his death shall bring.”  The flood of Noah did not come as a surprise; it had been predicted for four generations.

The significance behind the  name Methusaleh also hints that a message might be hidden behind these other names found in chapter 5.  Adam had a son named Seth, Seth had a son named Enoch, and so on.  The problem with Genesis 5 is that these proper names are not translated for the reader from their Hebrew meanings, so you have to unravel these by digging into the meaning of the Hebrew roots that make up the names.

  • Adam: (adomah) “man”
  • Seth: “appointed” (Genesis 4:25)
  • Enosh: (from root anash, “to be incurable”) “mortal,” frail,” “miserable”
  • Kenan: “sorrow,” “dirge,” “elegy”
  • Mahalal’el: “the Blessed God” – (mahalal) “blessed”; (El) the name for God
  • Jared: (from the verb yaradh) “shall come down”
  • Enoch: “commencement” or “teaching”
  • Methusaleh: “his death shall bring” – muth, a root that means “death”; shalach means “bring” or “send forth”
  • Lamech: “despairing” (from which we get “lament” or “lamentation”)
  • Noah: (derived from nacham) “comfort” or “rest” (Genesis 5:29)

We now can look at the genealogy with more insight.  The sequence – Adam – Seth – Enosh – Kenan – Mahalaleel – Jared – Enoch – Methusaleh – Lamech – Noah – reads, in English, “Man [is] appointed mortal sorrow; [but] the blessed God shall come down teaching [that His] death shall bring [the] despairing rest.”

There are several profound lessons here.  First, here is a summary of the New Testament Gospel tucked away in a genealogy in the Torah.  This demonstrates something we will encounter throughout the Scripture: every detail is there by design.  It also tells us that God’s plan of redemption was not a knee-jerk reaction to chapter 3.  God had ordained it before the foundation of the world.

Yes, there are hidden messages in the Bible, and I don’t mean just the equidistant letter sequences that have caused such controversies in recent years.  There are dozens of other kinds of codes that don’t require a computer to decipher; they are there if you know how to look.  The Scripture is inexhaustible – you can never get to the bottom of its depth.  And that’s what you would expect from the Word of God.

Let me remind you: the New Testament is in the Old Testament concealed, and the Old Testament is in the New Testament revealed.  Many things in the Old Testament do not seem to make sense until you illuminate them with the New Testament.

Did You Know (Part I)…

Did you know…the Triumphal Entry of Jesus was predicted almost 300 years before it happened!  The Septuagint has been dated to 270 B.C.  The Septuagint was necessary because the Jews of that day spoke Greek rather than the Hebrew in which the scriptures were penned.  Liken it to going to Catholic mass in Latin.  Nobody speaks fluent Latin these days and they did not speak fluent Hebrew either.  There was a need for a version of the Holy Scriptures that could be understood by these Greek-speaking Jews.

  • Septuagint Translation (LXX): From 285-270 B.C., Ptolemy Philadelphus II commissioned 70 top scholars at Alexandria to translate the Hebrew Tenach (Old Testament) into the common Greek of that day.
  • It is the primary quoted text in the New Testament.
  • Jesus quotes Daniel 3 times: “Daniel the Prophet”

The following is excerpted from one of my favorite authors, Chuck Missler, in his commentary on the Book of Daniel (specifically Chapter 9).

Gabriel comes and delivers a message to Daniel.  Now while I [was] speaking, praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God, yes while I [was] speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering (Daniel 9:20-21 NKJV).

The “70 Weeks” of Daniel

  • The Scope 9:24
  • The 69 Weeks 9:25
  • (The Interval) 9:26
  • The 70th Week 9:27 
  • The Scope (verse 24)

24] Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy Place.

shabu’im = sevens, “week.” (Gen 29:26-28; Lev 25, 26).
hatak, determined, reckoned.

  1. The focus of the passage is on the Jews, not the Church or the Gentile world.  
  2. The six major items listed have yet to be completed…to seal up (close authority of) the vision; to anoint the godesh gadashim, the Holy of Holies, etc.

Unfulfilled in over 2000 years: v.26 will detail an intervening Interval between the 69th and 70th Weeks. A key to understanding this passage is to realize that the 70 “Weeks” are not all contiguous.

“Weeks” = ?

     Days: Sabbath on the 7th Day (Gen 2:2; Ex 20:11);
     Weeks: Feast of Weeks (Lev 23:15,16);
     Months: Nisan to Tishri (Ex 12:2; Lev 23:24);
     Years: Sabbatical Years for the Land (Lev 25:1-22; 26:33-35; Deut 15;
     Ex23:10,11; 2 Chr 36:19-21).

     Note: focus of entire prophecy is Israel, not the Gentile world (Dan
     9:24).Seventy “Sevens” imply weeks of years (Gen 29:27, et al.).
     Sabbath forthe land ordained and failure to keep the sabbath of
     the land was the very basis for 70 years captivity (2 Chr 36:19-21).

The 69 Weeks (verse 25)

25] Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the King shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall,even in troublous times.

The Trigger (terminus ad quo):

   The Decrees to “Rebuild Jerusalem”? 

  1. Cyrus, 537 B.C. Ezra 1:2-4 
  2. Darius Ezra 6:1-5, 8, 12
  3. Artaxerxes, 458 B.C. Ezra 7:11-26
  4. Artaxerxes, 445 B.C. Neh 2:5-8, 17, 18

             (1) (2) and (3) were to build the Temple. Only the last one (4) was to rebuild
             the city, the walls, etc. Note:  rehob, “street”; haruts, moat,
             fortification. Why “7 + 62”? Time to build the city? Time to close the
            Old Testament canon? Time between Testaments?

Nominal 360-day Years

  • Biblical Usage: Genesis (Gen 7:24; 8:3,4); Daniel (Dan 9:27; 12:6); Revelation (Rev 11:2,3; 13:5).
  • Ancient calendars based on 360-day years.
  • Assyrians, Chaldeans, Egyptians, Hebrews, Persians, Greeks,Phoenicians, Chinese, Mayans, Hindus, Carthaginians, Etruscans, Teutons, et al.

All these calendars were based on a 360-day year; typically, twelve 30-day months. (In ancient Chaldea, their calendar was based on a 360-day year and it is from this Babylonian tradition that we have 360 degrees in a circle, 60 minutes to an hour, 60 seconds in each minute, etc.)

  • Orbital Changes? Long day of Joshua (Josh 10:12, 13) due to Mars
    pass-bys? [Strangely corroborated by Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s
    , which draws on eye witness account of the two moons of
    Mars before adequate telescopes available. Cf. Joshua Commentary
    or our briefing package, Signs in the Heavens..]

In 701 B.C., all calendars appear to have been reorganized. Numa Pompilius,the second King of Rome, reorganized the original calendar of 360 days per year, by adding 5 days per year. King Hezekiah, Numa’s contemporary, reorganized his Jewish calendar by adding a month each Jewish leap year (on a cycle of 7 among every 19 years).

The Target (terminus ad quem)

     The Meshiach Nagid: “The Messiah the King.” The prediction is to
     the presentation of the Messiah the King (Nagid is first used of King
     Saul). On several occasions in the New Testament when they attempted
     to take Jesus as a King, He invariably declined, “Mine hour is not yet
     come.” (Jn 6:15; 7:30, 44; etc.) Then one day, He arranges it.

The Triumphal Entry
     Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem:
     behold, thy King cometh unto thee: He is just, and having salvation; 

     lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
          Zechariah 9:9

All four Gospels, Mt 21:1-9; Mk 11:1-10; Lk 19:29-39; Jn 12:12-16. Nisan 10:“take to everyone a lamb.” Jesus deliberately arranges to fulfill Zech 9:9. This is the only day He allows them to proclaim Him King (Lk 19:38).

     Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace 
     in heaven, and glory in the highest.
          Luke 19:38

…quoting Psalm 118.

     And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, 
    “Master, rebuke thy disciples.”
          Luke 19:39

Why? What for? The Pharisees assure our noticing the significance!

     And He answered and said unto them, “I tell you that, if these should 
     hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.”
          Luke 19:40

Jesus held them accountable to recognize this very day (Lk 19:41-44). This was the 10th of Nisan, prior to the Passover on the 14th of Nisan, A.D. 32.
